Addictive behaviors.

Individuals can become addicted to, or dependent upon, any number of activities,
substances, objects, feelings, and behaviors.  The hallmarks of addiction are the
compulsive behaviors, the cravings, and the urges associated with the object of
one's addiction.  Obsessive and intrusive thoughts occur.  Drugs, sex, gambling,
shopping, running, working, and eating are common sources of addiction-- and
all take a toll on each individuals every day life.

Addiction has a high cost.  Sometimes that cost is physical.  Sometimes it is
financial.  Sometimes it is psychological.  Sometimes it involves relationships.
And sometimes it is health-related.  Yet no matter what, addiction and addictive
behaviors always leave the individual experiencing the addictive behaviors
feeling extremely helpless and out of control.  And those around the addicted
person are often left trying to help the addict get through something they do not
completely understand, no less know how to treat.

When an activity becomes the object of a compulsive obsession, it can become
all-consuming, getting in the way of personal commitments, physical health,
financial responsibilities, relationships, functioning at work, or functioning in all
areas every day.  And with evidence of addiction being a brain disease, an
addictive cycle can progress and continue.  Physical addiction can occur.
Psychological addiction is possible.  In any and all events, pain is felt and
experienced by all involved.

People struggling with addictive behaviors do not have to struggle alone.  More
and more is being understood about addiction and the seriousness of such a
disorder.  Help is available.
