Depression.
Every once in a while, we all experience the blues. Events happen in life that
bring about sad feelings, and we react accordingly. But when we experience
feelings of sadness or hopelessness that extend for more than a couple of
weeks, and this sadness makes it difficult to get out of bed or make it through
each day, we should pay attention. It may be evidence of clinical depression,
and depression can be a dangerous disorder.
Some symptoms of depression are a depressed mood for over two weeks, loss of
interest in once enjoyed activities, changes in appetite and sleeping habits,
difficultly concentrating, a lack of energy, slowed movements, feelings of
worthlessness, and thoughts of death or suicide. Depression affects the way
people see themselves, their world, and their future, and can be deadly. People
with serious depression consider suicide.
When depression is properly diagnosed by a doctor, research confirms that
depression is highly treatable. And many people learn to cope with their
depression and again live meaningful lives. Depression takes the joy out of life.
