Life transitions.

Every day each one of us goes through a number of transitions.  For example,
when we wake up in the morning and get out of bed, we make a transition from a
resting,  recooperative state called sleep to a state which involves action and
activity (being awake).  When we switch from one role to another during the day
(mother to coworker, boyfriend to entrepreneur, partner to father),  we make
transitions as well.  Most of the time these transitions are so seamless we don't
even realize we are transitioning, yet they are transitions just the same.

Then there are transitions that are more life-changing.  These are transitions of
which we can't help but take notice.  They include divorce, the termination of a
relationship (whatever kind), the need to relocate, losing or changing
employment, a change in our health status, or even loss and death of someone
we love.  These transitions are more intense and can have an alarming and
unsettling impact on our everyday lives.

Managing life-altering transitions, while difficult, is possible.  Learning to
negotiate transitions is just that-- something we learn. And it is something we can
do well and effectively with guidance and support.  As we manage and assimilate
transitions into our lives, we learn about our capacity for tolerance and our ability
to cope.
